The past few months I've been having some beer making struggles. Flavors are off. Then there was that bacterial infection. Also Dustin is gone, so not a whole lot of beer getting consumed. With spring's arrival, I've been wanting more light, crisp, refreshing beers. I took a gamble and ordered from High Gravity Brewing, the only woman (co)owned beer company I have encountered. (If you want to make me happy buy me
this shirt.) Today I kegged a cream ale and transferred a honey wheat--both from High Gravity. I'm doing a happy dance. The cream ale is amazing and its the lightest colored beer I've made. This company has different brewing instructions. Their method seems to be working. The honey wheat...needs more time to mellow. Its too honey-ish for me, but its only a week old, so I'll not make judgements.
My other brewgirl moment of happiness what surprising a hipster at the beer supply store. Most of the beer makers I've met in North Carolina look like this.
This happens to be what the employee at the brew store looked like today. I come in with two preschoolers, and ask for exactly what I need. Then decide to buy a nice bottle of Saison, asking for it by name. The hipster asks me, "What do you brew?" Oh poor boy. He didn't expect me to start babbling excitedly about my beautiful beer that I'm so excited about today. I think we were both surprised that he had something to learn from me...a frazzled mom, with barely well behaved kids.
In two more weeks, I'll be able to show you pictures of my beautiful beer.
